Authoring For AIR with Flex 3, New Adobe Article

With the recent relaunch of the Adobe Developer Connection for MAX, I'm proud to say that I've contributed an article to the new AIR Developer Center.  I created a Flickr image uploader in Flex and wrote about the application for the article - this is the second time that I've written about Flex and AIR for Adobe.

Hotfixes and Updates

A hotfix and an update, both worth mentioning, came out last week while at WebDU.

Adobe released Flex 2.0.1 SDK hotfix 1 to address a number of bugs, full details in the link below.

Version 4 of Charles came out as well, this is an essential tool for RIA developers that allows you to view the traffic between your machine and the internet.

Flex Video Show and Snap App

Making captures of the video you're playing back, adding notes to those shots and then printing all of that out on a formatted  page, plus captioning for the video in five languages including English - all of these features of one Flex application.  What do you think? Well this is a demo application that I've just built and it's online now for you to check out.

Adobe Flex Developer Derby for Australia

Adobe and Builder AU have paired up to deliver an Australian version of the Flex Developer Derby.

I don't recall seeing any announcement of this anywhere, discovered it via a banner ad on Builder AU today.  The competition seems to mirror the recent offering for North America, some neat prizes on offering - each category winner will get an xBox 360 and the first 20 entrants to be selected and featured will get an AUD$50 iTunes gift card.

Entries have to be in by Wednesday 9th August, 2006.

It's official, Flex 2 Beta 3

Just saw it on labs.adobe.com right now, Flex 2 Beta 3 is available for download - so go nuts folk...

webDU Kickoff Last Night - Photos

webDU had an unofficial  kick start last night with the annual national user group meeting held on the evening of day zero. I've taken a  few quick photos with my Nokia N70 and have posted them to the Flickr webDU group that Ben Bishop had created.

The evening was reasonably well attended, most of the time was taken up by a presentation by the two Marks from Adobe Australia, Mark Blair & Mark Szulc, with a healthy Q & A session afterwards.  Folk were keen to know more about what's happening with products post-merger.

One thing that got the audience's interest was a finance sector demo that the Marks did that showed Flex, Flash Media Server and LifeCycle working together - I suspect that there might be more interest in LifeCycle's capabilities in the MM community once we see it's potential.

The webDu Flickr group can be found at: http://www.flickr.com/groups/webdu

Please feel free to join the group and contribute your own webDU photos if you've got them.

RIA Links

I was fortunate enough to be asked to speak about Rich Internet Applications yesterday at Digital Media Festival yesterday here in Sydney. The festival continues today with some other great speakers, I saw Les Walkling's Photoshop presentation yesterday and I'm sure that his session today will be equally interesting.

During my presentation I demoed some RIAs, some AJAX, the majority Flash based. Here's the list of links that I promised that I'd post today:

The Initial Offering Of Flex Builder 2 Will Not Be For Everyone

Hmmm, from the Flex 2 FAQ:

"The initial release of Flex Builder 2 will be available on Windows only. We plan to make a version for OS X available shortly thereafter."

I know this is an Eclipse plugin, wonder what's so Window's specific.
